Peptides are the fastest-growing — and most misunderstood — corner of the supplement market. This guide starts with what peptides actually are and which ones are legal to sell, then covers why the manufacturer you pick decides whether your product survives marketplace review, retail diligence and third-party lab testing.
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids — the same molecular alphabet proteins are written in, just a much shorter word. Where a whey protein molecule might run to hundreds of amino acids, a dietary peptide is typically somewhere between two and fifty. That difference in length is what changes how the ingredient dissolves, how it tastes, how the body absorbs it, and — crucially for a brand — how it is regulated.
Almost every peptide sold as a supplement is a hydrolysate: a food protein deliberately broken down with enzymes under controlled time, temperature and pH, then filtered, concentrated and spray-dried. The output is not one molecule but a distribution of fragments, described by molecular weight range in Daltons. Two suppliers can both print "collagen peptides" on a drum and ship materially different products.
Definition
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids — the same building blocks as protein, just far shorter. Convention puts peptides at roughly 2–50 amino acids; anything longer is generally called a protein. Length matters commercially because shorter chains absorb differently, taste different, and are regulated differently.
Sourcing
Nearly all dietary peptides are made by enzymatic hydrolysis: a food protein — bovine hide, fish skin, whey, casein, egg, collagen, soy or pea — is broken into smaller fragments using controlled enzymes, then filtered and spray-dried. The resulting powder is characterized by molecular weight distribution, not a single molecule.
Positioning
Hydrolysates dissolve fast in cold water, carry far less viscosity and off-taste than intact protein, and let a brand talk about a specific functional benefit — skin, joint, gut lining, recovery — rather than generic protein grams.
Food-derived peptides — collagen, whey, casein, egg, marine and plant hydrolysates — are dietary ingredients with a long history of use. Synthetic drug-type peptides — the injectable compounds marketed online as "research peptides" — are pharmaceutical-class molecules that FDA does not treat as dietary ingredients. They look like one category in a search result and behave like two entirely different businesses. Everything on this page concerns the first.

The largest peptide category in supplements. Hydrolyzed Type I and III bovine collagen at roughly 2,000–5,000 Da, sold for skin, hair, nail and joint support in powders, sticks and gummies.
Type I collagen from fish skin or scales, typically lower molecular weight than bovine, pescatarian-friendly, and preferred in beauty-from-within positioning. Requires fish allergen declaration.
Undenatured chicken sternum collagen used at very small doses (around 40mg) for joint comfort — a very different formulation problem than a 10g collagen scoop.
Pre-digested dairy protein fractions used in fast-absorbing sports recovery and clinical nutrition. Bitterness is the defining formulation challenge and drives the flavor system.
Colostrum supplies immunoglobulins and bioactive peptide fractions; lactoferrin is a heat-sensitive iron-binding protein. Both need gentle processing to protect activity.
Hydrolyzed egg membrane, pea and rice peptides for vegan or allergen-alternative positioning, often with better solubility than the parent protein.
Small di- and tri-peptide-adjacent actives used in sports nutrition. Hygroscopic behavior and stability in blends drive packaging choices.
A tripeptide with notoriously poor oral stability — delivery system, not dose, decides whether a formula is credible.
Specific standardized hydrolysate fractions marketed for sleep, stress or blood-pressure support. These are branded ingredients with their own dossiers and claim substantiation.
Collagen plus hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, biotin and botanicals — the highest-volume format in DTC peptide supplements today.

This is the section most peptide guides skip, and it is the one that decides whether a brand still exists in two years. Regulation is not an obstacle bolted onto a peptide launch — it is the first design constraint.
Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, a dietary ingredient must be a vitamin, mineral, herb, amino acid, dietary substance to supplement the diet, or a concentrate or extract of one of those. Hydrolyzed food proteins comfortably qualify. A synthetic molecule designed to act like a drug does not.
Ingredients marketed in the US food supply before October 15, 1994 are grandfathered. Anything newer is a New Dietary Ingredient and requires an NDI notification to FDA 75 days before marketing, with safety evidence. Novel peptide fractions and newly branded hydrolysates frequently land here, and a manufacturer should tell you before you print labels.
FDA has stated that certain synthetic peptides — BPC-157 among them — do not meet the dietary ingredient definition, and it has evaluated several peptides in its bulk drug substances review for compounding. Selling them as supplements invites warning letters, marketplace delisting and payment-processor termination.
Written specifications, identity testing of every incoming dietary ingredient, batch records, in-process controls and finished-product verification. For hydrolysates, identity testing should include molecular weight distribution and amino acid profile, not just a supplier certificate taken on faith.
Skin elasticity support, joint comfort, recovery and gut lining support are defensible with substantiation. Anything implying treatment of a disease converts your supplement into an unapproved drug. The FDA disclaimer must appear, and Prop 65 thresholds apply for California shipments.
Marine collagen is a fish allergen. Dairy hydrolysates are a milk allergen. Bovine material needs origin and BSE-free attestation. Retail quality teams ask for all of this, and Amazon increasingly does too.

With most supplement categories, a mediocre manufacturer produces a mediocre product. With peptides, a mediocre manufacturer produces a liability. Four reasons:
You cannot look at a white powder and tell a 3,000 Da hydrolysate from ground gelatin. Only incoming testing — molecular weight distribution, amino acid profile, protein content — separates them, and a plant that skips it is effectively selling you a supplier's marketing copy.
If a manufacturer happily runs whatever you ask for, that is not service — it is risk transfer. Warning letters, ASIN suppressions and processor terminations name the brand on the label, not the plant that filled it.
Hydrolysates are inherently bitter and often sulfurous. A technically compliant collagen powder with no masking strategy still dies at review number twelve. Flavor development is the difference between a subscription product and a one-time purchase.
Gummy depositing heat, tablet compression, retort conditions and humid warehouses all degrade sensitive fractions like lactoferrin, colostrum immunoglobulins and glutathione. Format choice has to be made with the active's stability in mind, not after tooling is ordered.

A collagen peptide is defined by its molecular weight distribution, not by the word on the label. Ask whether incoming lots are verified against a specified Da range — this is the difference between a real hydrolysate and cheap gelatin sold as peptides.
