Best Capsule Supplement Manufacturers for Brands

Capsules are the most-shipped supplement format in the world, and the one where quality differences are hardest to see from the outside. This guide explains how encapsulation actually works, what separates a real manufacturer from a bottler, how US regulation treats these products, and who the top 5 capsule manufacturers are for eCommerce brands.

How Capsule Supplements Are Actually Made

A capsule supplement is a measured powder fill inside a shell: actives, fillers and flow agents blended to uniformity, then dosed volumetrically into a two-piece gelatin or HPMC capsule. The shell hides the formulation entirely — no taste, no texture, no visual cue — which is precisely why capsule quality has to be proven in data rather than judged by the customer.

Production runs in three technical stages, and a failure in any one of them shows up as an under-dosed capsule, a capsule that will not open, or a lot that fails a marketplace test — never as something a buyer can see.

    Blending & Flowability

    Step 1

Actives, fillers and flow agents are screened and blended to a validated uniformity. Capsule filling is a volumetric process, so bulk density and flow behavior — not just the recipe — determine whether every capsule carries the same milligrams.

    Encapsulation

    Step 2

Dosator or tamping-pin machines compress the powder into a slug and seat it inside a gelatin or HPMC shell. Machine speed, tamping force and shell moisture all move fill weight, so the line is checked continuously against a weight-variation spec.

    Polishing, Sorting & Bottling

    Step 3

Capsules are deducted, polished and metal-detected, then counted into bottles with desiccant and induction seals, torque-checked, labeled and lot-coded — with disintegration and dissolution testing confirming the dose actually releases.

    An important distinction

Many companies marketed as "capsule manufacturers" are in fact bottlers: they buy bulk finished capsules from a third party and count them into your bottle. That is a legitimate business, but it means the formula is not yours, the excipient ratio cannot be changed, the cost structure is fixed, and any potency question has to travel back up a supply chain you do not control. A true manufacturer owns the weighing, blending and encapsulation — and can therefore change a spec when your product needs it.

Why Capsules Still Win in eCommerce

Powders and gummies get the attention, but capsules remain the backbone of online supplement sales. They are the cheapest format to ship, the easiest to stabilize, the fastest to bring to market, and the only one that lets a brand carry a wide catalog without a flavor program behind every SKU.

    Shipping economics

A 60-count bottle is light, compact and durable. Margins survive parcel rates and FBA fees in a way that 2 kg tubs and glass bottles simply do not.

    No flavor problem

Bitter botanicals, minerals and mushroom extracts go straight into a shell. There is no masking program, which removes the single most expensive step in powder and liquid development.

    Catalog speed

Once a capsule line is qualified, new SKUs share tooling, bottles and testing methods — so a brand can go from one hero product to a full range without re-engineering.

    Our Encapsulation Capability Since 1980

Peakfinity Labs was founded in 1980 in herbal and botanical production, and botanicals are the hardest thing to put in a capsule. Low-density plant powders, variable extract potency, hygroscopic behavior and adulteration risk are exactly the problems that separate an encapsulator who runs a machine from one who understands what is inside the shell.

That capability now runs across a company-owned facility of 375,000+ sq ft with a US headquarters in Exton, Pennsylvania. Blending, automated encapsulation, banding, polishing, metal detection, bottling and analytical and stability labs all sit under one roof — which is why a formula does not have to be re-engineered when a brand goes from a 2,000-unit pilot to six-figure volumes.

How to Judge a Capsule Manufacturer

Six checks that separate a genuine encapsulator from a company that buys bulk capsules and fills your bottle.

    Verified Weight Variation

Encapsulation doses by volume while your label declares milligrams. Ask how often capsules are weight-checked on the line and what the accepted variation limit is. A manufacturer who cannot state a number is not controlling your dose.

    Disintegration and Dissolution Data

A capsule that does not open is a capsule that does not work. USP disintegration testing — and dissolution where the active warrants it — is the only proof that the dose is actually released rather than passing through intact.

    Shell Selection Expertise

Bovine gelatin, HPMC, pullulan and enteric shells behave differently with hygroscopic, oily or acid-sensitive actives. The right shell is a formulation decision, not a checkbox — and it decides vegan, Halal, kosher and delayed-release positioning too.

    Honest Excipient Practice

Magnesium stearate, silica and rice flour exist to make powder flow. The question is proportion. Ask what percentage of the fill is active versus excipient, and be skeptical of any 'proprietary blend' that hides the ratio behind a single total.

Fill Weight and Capsule Size Fit

A size 0 capsule holds roughly 400–500 mg of typical powder. Brands routinely design labels that physically will not fit the capsule. A real manufacturer runs a density calculation before artwork and tells you the honest capsule count per serving.

    Identity Testing on Every Ingredient

21 CFR 111 requires identity testing of each incoming dietary ingredient — botanical adulteration and under-potent extracts are the two most common failures. Ask to see the raw-material COA and the confirmatory identity method, not just the supplier's word.

Capsule Types, Sizes & Hero Ingredients

The same validated blend can be delivered in whichever shell and release profile your product actually needs.

    Capsule Size Reference

Approximate fill capacity for a typical powder blend. Actual fill weight depends entirely on bulk density, which is why the calculation happens before artwork is approved.

    Size 000
    ~1,000 mg

Largest common size; difficult for some consumers to swallow.

    Size 00
    ~600–750 mg

The most common size for single-active supplements.

    Size 0
    ~400–500 mg

Comfortable everyday size for multi-capsule servings.

    Size 1–3
    ~150–400 mg

Smaller doses, kids' formats and potent micro-dosed actives.

    Hero Ingredients We Formulate With

    Vitamin & Mineral Blends

Multivitamin fills where chelated mineral forms drive both capsule size and tolerability.

    Standardized Botanical Extracts

Ashwagandha, turmeric, milk thistle and berberine, verified against marker compounds rather than sold as generic plant powder.

    Probiotics

CFU overage, low water activity and delayed-release shells determine whether the count on the label survives to expiry.

    Nootropics

Citicoline, L-theanine, alpha-GPC and caffeine blends where hygroscopic actives need moisture control.

    Omega & Oil Actives

Liquid-fill hard capsules and softgels for oils that would otherwise oxidize in a powder fill.

    Enzymes & Digestive Aids

Activity-unit labeling and enteric protection so the enzyme survives gastric acid.

    Collagen & Peptides

Capsule formats for consumers who reject powder taste, with realistic serving-count expectations.

    Mushroom Extracts

Lion's mane, reishi and cordyceps standardized to beta-glucans, not unstandardized mycelium on grain.

Ingredient descriptions describe category positioning and formulation considerations only. Finished-product claims are reviewed against FDA structure/function rules before artwork is approved.

    US Compliance for Capsule Supplements

Capsule supplements are regulated in the United States as dietary supplements under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA). The format carries obligations that are easy to overlook precisely because nothing is visible:

    1. 1
Manufacture under 21 CFR Part 111

Dietary supplement cGMP requires written specifications, identity testing of every incoming dietary ingredient, batch records and finished-product verification. For capsules it also means documented blend-uniformity and weight-variation procedures — an encapsulation step you cannot verify is a dose you cannot claim.

    2. 2
      Prove the dose is released

Disintegration testing to USP standards, and dissolution where the active warrants it, is what demonstrates the capsule opens and the ingredient becomes available. Over-polished or over-dried shells can fail this even when the fill is perfect.

    3. 3
      Declare the ingredient exactly

The Supplement Facts panel must state the dietary ingredient, the part of the plant where applicable, and the amount per serving. Proprietary blends may state a total, but the ingredients must still be listed in descending order by weight.

    4. 4
      Disclose shell and excipient materials

Bovine or porcine gelatin, HPMC, titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate and colorants all belong in Other Ingredients. This is also where vegan, Halal, kosher and allergen positioning is either supported or quietly contradicted.

    5. 5
      Make structure/function claims only

You can say a product 'helps support joint comfort'; you cannot say it treats arthritis. Disease claims turn a supplement into an unapproved drug, and the FDA disclaimer must appear on the label.

    6. 6
      Test contaminants and control moisture

Heavy metals, microbiological limits and pesticide screening apply as they do to any supplement, and botanical identity testing guards against adulteration. Capsules add moisture control, because a shell that absorbs water becomes brittle or sticky — which is why desiccant and induction seals are part of the spec. California Prop 65 thresholds are stricter than federal defaults for any DTC brand shipping nationwide.

Our quality standards and manufacturing process pages walk through how each of these is documented on a real project.

Amazon, TikTok Shop & Shopify Readiness

A capsule SKU that fails a marketplace compliance review is not a product, it is a suspended listing. Every program we run ships channel-ready:

    FBA-ready output

Induction-sealed bottles with desiccant, correct labeling and barcoding, poly-bagging and case configuration, plus lot codes and expiry formatting Amazon accepts.

    Documentation pack

COA per batch with potency, weight variation and disintegration, GMP certificate, facility registration and ingredient specs — the exact bundle marketplaces request during a listing review.

    Restock cadence

14–21 day restocks keep subscribe-and-save programs and viral TikTok spikes from stocking out.
